Vowels and Consists

Our English alphabet consists of 26 letters in all (a,b,c,..........), of these a,e,i,o,u, are called vowels.
The rest of them are called consonants.

Usage of 'A'
1- 'A' is always used with a singular noun.
2-in front of all words beginning with a consonant sound (cat ,book, tiger, doctor, etc)
3-Exception:eg.'uniform','one'
though uniformbegins with a vowel it has a consonant sound so we always write a uniform instead of
an uniform,a one -rupee note instead of an one rupee note.

usage of 'an'
1- "An" is always used with a singular noun.
2- In front of all words beginning with the vowel sound (apple, orange, etc).
3-Exception:words like 'hour', "honest". Though these words begin with a consonant but, they have vowel sound . there for write an hour, an honest man.

usage of 'The'
1-We use 'a' or 'an' when we talk of any person or thing . but we use 'the' when we are talking about aparticular person or thing.

e.g.  a. give me a pen.(any pen)
   b. give me the pen in your poket. ( a particular pen)
when we speak of a person or thing for the first time , we use 'a'or 'an' , but when we speak of it again,we use 'the'.

e.g. 1. A dog ran after my brother . the dog was made.
                  2.  Here is a.purse. keep the purse safely.

NOTE: We always use 'the' with the following.
the heavenly bodies.   ( the sun, the moon)
with the titles of books. (the gita the quran)
with the names of well known buildings. (the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort)
with the names of rivers and mountains. (the ganga, the himalayas)
But we never use 'the' in front of the names of particular person or place.
